Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Welcome to today's BibleMouse art lesson! Today we'll explore how God gives us creativity to shape and form, just like He formed us.

💭 Review Question: What did we learn about carving techniques in our last lesson?
2Teaching (15 min)

Clay is a wonderful material that changes and transforms with our touch. Today we'll learn how to prepare clay through wedging.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Clay is made from earth materials and can be soft or firm
  • Wedging removes air bubbles and makes clay smooth
  • Proper clay preparation is important for successful sculpting
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What do you think clay feels like?
  • How might clay be similar to how God shapes us?
3Activity: Clay Wedging Practice (15 min)
hands-on

Students will practice wedging clay to prepare it for sculpting

📝 Instructions:
  1. Put on apron
  2. Take a small piece of clay
  3. Press and fold clay repeatedly
  4. Turn clay and repeat pressing
  5. Notice how clay becomes smoother
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Use smaller clay amount

Challenge: Create a small test sculpture after wedging

4Closing (5 min)

Review what we learned about clay preparation

📝 Review Questions:
  • What is wedging?
  • Why do we remove air bubbles?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll learn how to create pinch pots using our prepared clay!

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Wedging is crucial for removing air bubbles that can cause clay to crack

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Demonstrate wedging slowly
  • Allow child to explore clay texture
  • Praise effort over perfection
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might get frustrated if clay doesn't immediately cooperate

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Consistent pressing and folding motion

Extension Activities

  • Research how ancient cultures made pottery
  • Read BibleMouse Resource Guide section on clay sculpting techniques
