Learning Objectives

1

Understand how objects appear smaller when farther away

2

Draw a path or road showing perspective using size changes

3

Develop patience and attention to detail in artistic work

Psalm 103:12

As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

Psalm 103:12 (WEB)

Illustrates the concept of distance and perspective, showing how distance can change perception

📦 Materials Needed

  • White drawing paper
  • Pencils
  • Ruler
  • Colored pencils
  • BibleMouse Resource Guide: Grade 3 Art

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

In today's BibleMouse art lesson, we'll explore how things look smaller as they move away from us. Just like in Psalm 103, distance changes how we see things!

💭 Review Question: What did we learn about overlapping objects in our last lesson?
2Teaching (12 min)

Perspective is about how things look different based on their distance from us. Imagine standing on a long road - the road looks wide near you but gets narrower as it reaches the horizon.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Objects appear smaller when they are farther away
  • Roads and paths can show perspective through size changes
  • The bottom of the page represents the closest point
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What happens to a road as it goes into the distance?
  • How do trees or buildings look when they're far away?
3Activity: Perspective Path Drawing (18 min)
hands-on

Create a road or path that gets narrower as it reaches the horizon

📝 Instructions:
  1. Draw a horizontal line near the bottom of the page for the bottom of the road
  2. Draw two lines that start wide at the bottom and gradually come together at the top
  3. Add trees or telephone poles that get smaller toward the horizon
  4. Color your path using colored pencils
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Draw a straight path with fewer details

Challenge: Add multiple paths or landscape elements showing perspective

4Closing (5 min)

Review how perspective helps us understand depth in art

📝 Review Questions:
  • How did we show distance in our drawing?
  • What makes objects look farther away?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll explore how distant objects look lighter and less detailed

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Perspective is a complex concept for young artists. Focus on fun and exploration.

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Use your ruler to help draw straight lines
  • Demonstrate the lesson by drawing alongside your child
  • Praise effort over perfection
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children may find it challenging to make lines converge naturally

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Consistent size reduction as objects move toward the horizon

Extension Activities

  • Take a walk and discuss how distant objects look smaller
  • Use BibleMouse Printables Library for additional perspective worksheets
