Learning Objectives

1

Understand six techniques for creating depth in art

2

Create visual examples demonstrating space in artwork

3

Appreciate God's complex design in visual perception

Genesis 1:31

God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good.

Genesis 1:31 (WEB)

Just as God carefully designed depth and perspective in creation, artists can intentionally create depth in their artwork

📦 Materials Needed

  • drawing paper
  • pencils
  • colored pencils
  • ruler
  • BibleMouse Art Worksheet

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Explore how artists create the illusion of three-dimensional space on a flat surface

💭 Review Question: What did we learn about texture in our last art lesson?
2Teaching (15 min)

Introduce six depth techniques: overlapping, size variation, placement, detail, color, and value

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Overlapping: Objects in front block objects behind
  • Size Variation: Smaller objects appear farther away
  • Placement: Lower objects seem closer, higher objects seem distant
  • Detail: Close objects have more detail, distant objects less detail
  • Color: Warm colors come forward, cool colors recede
  • Value: Lighter values appear closer, darker values seem farther
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • Can you find examples of depth in pictures around our home?
  • How does God use depth in nature?
3Activity: Depth Demonstration Sketch (15 min)
hands-on

Create a practice page demonstrating all six depth techniques

📝 Instructions:
  1. Divide paper into six sections
  2. Draw a unique example in each section showing a depth technique
  3. Use pencils and colored pencils
  4. Label each section with its depth technique
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Focus on three depth techniques instead of six

Challenge: Create a landscape using all six techniques simultaneously

4Closing (5 min)

Review depth techniques and share artwork

📝 Review Questions:
  • What are the six ways to show space?
  • Which technique was most interesting to you?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll explore foreground, middle ground, and background in landscapes

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Third graders are developing spatial reasoning skills

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Demonstrate each technique before child attempts
  • Encourage creativity and experimentation
  • Praise effort over perfect execution
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might find it challenging to understand abstract depth concepts

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Intentional use of at least two depth techniques in artwork

Extension Activities

  • Photograph objects in your home showing depth
  • Create a depth-based scavenger hunt in nature
  • Watch BibleMouse Art Technique video on spatial perception
