Learning Objectives

1

Identify different value ranges created by a single light source

2

Recognize and label highlight, midtone, shadow, reflected light, and cast shadow

3

Develop observational skills and attention to visual detail

John 8:12

Jesus spoke to them again, saying, 'I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.'

John 8:12 (WEB)

Just as a light source reveals the true shape and depth of an object, Jesus reveals God's truth and brings clarity to our understanding

📦 Materials Needed

  • Pencils (various hardnesses)
  • Drawing paper
  • Blending stump or tissue
  • Lamp or directional light source
  • White objects (sphere, cube, or simple geometric shapes)

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Today's BibleMouse Art Adventure begins with our Light Source Detective mission! Remember how we explored value scales yesterday? Now we'll discover how light transforms the way we see objects.

💭 Review Question: What did we learn about light and dark values in our last lesson?
2Teaching (10 min)

We'll explore how a single light source creates different values on an object. Just like Jesus is our spiritual light, this lamp will be our artistic light!

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Highlight: The brightest spot where light hits directly
  • Midtone: The middle value of the object
  • Shadow: The darker area away from the light
  • Reflected Light: Soft light bouncing back into the shadowed area
  • Cast Shadow: The shadow the object creates on the surface beneath it
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • How does light change the way we see an object?
  • Can you find different values on an object in our room?
3Activity: Light Source Detective Sketch (20 min)
observation and hands-on

Set up a white object with a single light source. Carefully observe and sketch the object, labeling each value range.

📝 Instructions:
  1. Place a white object on a plain surface
  2. Position a lamp to create dramatic lighting
  3. Observe the object carefully
  4. Sketch the object, using different pencil pressures
  5. Label the highlight, midtone, shadow, reflected light, and cast shadow
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Use a basic shape like a sphere or cube

Challenge: Try sketching multiple objects with intersecting light sources

4Closing (5 min)

Review our Light Source Detective discoveries and how light reveals hidden details.

📝 Review Questions:
  • What did we learn about light and values today?
  • How many different values did you find in your drawing?

Coming up: Tomorrow, we'll dive deeper into shading a sphere and creating three-dimensional effects!

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Value is about the lightness or darkness of a color or tone. This lesson helps children understand how light creates depth and dimension.

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Encourage careful observation
  • Be patient with detailed drawing process
  • Praise effort over perfection
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might find it challenging to see subtle value changes

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Careful observation, ability to distinguish different light values

Extension Activities

  • Photograph objects with different lighting to compare
  • Create a value scale drawing in your BibleMouse Sketchbook
  • Explore light and shadow in nature during a walk

Ready for Tomorrow?

Great job completing today's lesson!
