Learning Objectives

1

Understand what a lever is and how it makes work easier

2

Demonstrate how different lever positions change lifting power

3

Appreciate God's wisdom in human problem-solving

Ecclesiastes 4:9

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor.

Ecclesiastes 4:9 (WEB)

Just as two people can work together to make a task easier, a lever helps us use tools to reduce physical effort

📦 Materials Needed

  • Ruler or long wooden stick
  • Small rock or heavy object
  • Fulcrum (can be a small block of wood)
  • Notebook for observations
  • Pencil

Lesson Plan

1Opening (3 min)

In today's BibleMouse science lesson, we'll explore how levers help us lift heavy things more easily!

💭 Review Question: What did we learn yesterday about simple machines?
2Teaching (10 min)

A lever is a simple machine that helps us move heavy things with less effort. It has three main parts: the load, the effort, and the fulcrum.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Levers can change how much force we need to move something
  • The position of the fulcrum matters a lot
  • God gave humans creativity to design helpful tools
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • Can you think of any levers you've seen before?
  • How might a lever help someone who isn't very strong?
3Activity: Lever Lifting Challenge (12 min)
hands-on

Experiment with different lever positions to lift a small rock

📝 Instructions:
  1. Place your ruler on a small block of wood (fulcrum)
  2. Put the rock on one end of the ruler
  3. Try pushing down on the other end to lift the rock
  4. Move the fulcrum to different positions
  5. Record how easy or hard it is to lift in each position
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Help child position the fulcrum and observe

Challenge: Measure and record the exact force needed in different configurations

4Closing (3 min)

Review how levers help us do work more easily

📝 Review Questions:
  • What are the three parts of a lever?
  • Why are levers helpful?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll explore another simple machine - ramps!

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Levers are fundamental to understanding mechanical advantage

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Be patient and let child explore
  • Encourage careful observation
  • Connect scientific learning to God's design
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might get frustrated if lifting doesn't work immediately

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Understanding of how fulcrum position changes lifting effort

Extension Activities

  • Find levers around the house (crowbar, scissors, nutcracker)
  • Draw and label a lever in the BibleMouse Printables workbook
