Learning Objectives

1

Understand that forces are needed to start and stop motion

2

Investigate how different forces affect object movement

3

Develop curiosity about how God's design makes motion possible

Proverbs 16:9

A man's heart plans his way, but Yahweh directs his steps.

Proverbs 16:9 (WEB)

Just as forces guide and direct motion, God guides our path and movement in life

📦 Materials Needed

  • Toy cars
  • Ramps
  • Different surfaces (carpet, wood floor, tile)
  • Measuring tape
  • Stopwatch
  • Notebook
  • Pencil

Lesson Plan

1Opening (3 min)

Welcome to today's BibleMouse science adventure! Last time we explored how forces make things move. Today, we'll discover what starts and stops motion.

💭 Review Question: What forces did we learn about in our last lesson?
2Teaching (10 min)

Forces help objects start moving and stop moving. When you push a toy car, you're creating a force that starts its motion. When you stop the car, another force brings it to a halt.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Forces can push or pull objects
  • Different surfaces create different amounts of friction
  • More force means faster or longer movement
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What happens when you gently push a car?
  • What makes a car slow down or stop?
3Activity: Force and Motion Exploration (12 min)
investigation

Test how different forces start and stop toy cars on various surfaces

📝 Instructions:
  1. Set up ramps on different surfaces
  2. Measure and record how far cars roll
  3. Try different push strengths
  4. Observe and record what stops the car
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Use only one surface, focus on basic pushing

Challenge: Create a chart comparing surface friction, measure precise distances

4Closing (3 min)

Review our discoveries about motion and forces

📝 Review Questions:
  • What helps an object start moving?
  • What makes an object stop?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll explore how forces can change an object's direction

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Second graders are developing understanding of cause and effect in physical systems

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Let child lead exploration
  • Ask open-ended questions
  • Encourage careful observation
🤔 Common Struggles:

Maintaining focus, understanding abstract force concepts

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Curiosity about movement, ability to describe basic observations

Extension Activities

  • Create a BibleMouse science journal to track investigations
  • Use BibleMouse Printables Library for force and motion worksheets

Ready for Tomorrow?
