Learning Objectives

1

Understand basic particle arrangement in solids, liquids, and gases

2

Create simple models showing how particles behave differently

3

Develop curiosity about God's intricate design in matter

Colossians 1:17

He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

Colossians 1:17 (WEB)

Just as God holds particles together, He designs the precise ways different states of matter behave

📦 Materials Needed

  • Marshmallows
  • Toothpicks
  • White paper
  • Colored pencils
  • Small clear container
  • Water

Lesson Plan

1Opening (3 min)

Welcome to today's BibleMouse science adventure! Yesterday we learned about measuring different states of matter. Today, we'll explore how tiny particles make up everything around us!

💭 Review Question: Can you remember two different states of matter we talked about yesterday?
2Teaching (10 min)

Particles are like tiny building blocks that make up everything. In solids, they're packed tightly. In liquids, they can move around. In gases, they spread out everywhere!

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Solids have particles close together
  • Liquids have particles that can slide past each other
  • Gases have particles that move freely
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What do you think happens to water when it gets very cold?
  • How might particles move differently in hot and cold temperatures?
3Activity: Particle Playground (12 min)
modeling

Create particle models using marshmallows and toothpicks to show how particles are arranged in different states of matter

📝 Instructions:
  1. Use marshmallows as 'particles'
  2. Connect marshmallows tightly for solids
  3. Space marshmallows loosely for liquids
  4. Spread marshmallows far apart for gases
  5. Draw your models on white paper
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Parent helps connect marshmallows

Challenge: Try to explain particle movement verbally

4Closing (3 min)

Let's review our particle adventure! God designed matter in amazing ways.

📝 Review Questions:
  • What did we learn about how particles behave?
  • In which state are particles closest together?

Coming up: Tomorrow, we'll act like particles and see how they move!

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

This lesson introduces abstract concept of particle arrangement through hands-on modeling

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Use gentle, encouraging language
  • Let child explore and make mistakes
  • Connect scientific learning to God's design
🤔 Common Struggles:

Abstract thinking about invisible particles can be challenging

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Child's ability to differentiate between particle arrangements

Extension Activities

  • Watch BibleMouse science video about states of matter
  • Explore particle movement with different temperature water

Ready for Tomorrow?

Great job completing today's lesson!
