Learning Objectives

1

Understand that gases spread out to fill their container

2

Demonstrate how gases have no definite shape or volume

3

Develop curiosity about God's creative design in matter

Job 37:16

Do you know the balancings of the clouds, the wondrous works of him who is perfect in knowledge?

Job 37:16 (WEB)

Just as gases move and change, God's understanding is dynamic and fills all space

📦 Materials Needed

  • Balloons
  • Empty water bottle
  • Plastic bag
  • Observation worksheet
  • Pencil

Lesson Plan

1Opening (3 min)

Welcome to today's BibleMouse science adventure! Yesterday we explored liquids, and today we'll discover the exciting world of gases.

💭 Review Question: Can you remember how liquids behave differently from solids?
2Teaching (10 min)

Gases are amazing! They're like invisible friends that spread out everywhere. Unlike solids or liquids, gases don't have a fixed shape.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Gases fill up whatever container they're in
  • Air is a gas we can't see but can feel
  • Gases can be compressed and expand
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What gases do you know about?
  • How is air different from water or a rock?
3Activity: Balloon Gas Exploration (12 min)
demonstration

We'll explore how gases behave by using balloons and containers

📝 Instructions:
  1. Blow up a balloon and observe its shape
  2. Release the balloon and watch how the air moves
  3. Try putting the balloon inside a water bottle
  4. Record observations on your BibleMouse worksheet
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Help child blow up balloon, focus on watching air move

Challenge: Predict how gas will behave in different containers

4Closing (3 min)

Review our gassy discoveries and thank God for creating such wonderful ways for matter to work!

📝 Review Questions:
  • What did we learn about gases today?
  • How do gases move differently from solids?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll sort different states of matter in our State Sorting Challenge!

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Gases can be abstract for young learners. Use lots of visual demonstrations.

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Use gentle, encouraging language
  • Let child explore and make observations
  • Connect scientific discovery to God's creativity
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might find it hard to understand something they can't see

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Child's ability to describe how gases spread and change shape

Extension Activities

  • Explore different types of gases using BibleMouse Resource Guide
  • Create a gas movement dance to help remember the concept

Ready for Tomorrow?

Great job completing today's lesson!
