Learning Objectives

1

Identify and categorize animals as herbivores, carnivores, or omnivores

2

Understand that different animals have different diets

3

Appreciate God's design in creating diverse creatures with unique needs

Genesis 1:29-30

God said, 'Behold, I have given you every herb yielding seed, which is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree, which bears fruit yielding seed. It will be food for you. To every animal of the earth, and to every bird of the sky, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food.' And it was so.

Genesis 1:29-30 (WEB)

Shows God's intentional design in creating different food sources for different creatures

📦 Materials Needed

  • Picture cards of animals
  • 3 large paper bags or sorting mats
  • Markers
  • Glue stick
  • Scissors
  • BibleMouse Science Worksheet (from Printables Library)

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Welcome to today's BibleMouse science adventure! Let's review what we learned about food chains yesterday.

💭 Review Question: Can you remember what a food chain is?
2Teaching (10 min)

Today we'll explore how different animals eat different things. Some animals eat plants, some eat other animals, and some eat both!

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Herbivores eat only plants
  • Carnivores eat only other animals
  • Omnivores eat both plants and animals
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What do you think a rabbit eats?
  • How about a lion?
  • Can you think of an animal that eats both plants and meat?
3Activity: Animal Diet Sorting Game (12 min)
sorting

Sort animal picture cards into three categories: Herbivores, Carnivores, and Omnivores

📝 Instructions:
  1. Label three bags or mats: 'Plant Eaters', 'Meat Eaters', 'Plant and Meat Eaters'
  2. Spread out animal picture cards
  3. Work together to sort the animals into the correct bags
  4. Discuss why each animal goes in its specific category
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Use fewer animal cards and help with sorting

Challenge: Have child explain why each animal belongs in its category

4Closing (3 min)

Review what we learned about different animal diets

📝 Review Questions:
  • What are the three types of eaters we learned about today?
  • Can you name an example of each type?

Coming up: Tomorrow, we'll build our very own food chains!

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Understanding animal diets is a fundamental concept in ecology

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Use enthusiasm when discussing different animals
  • Encourage curiosity about God's diverse creation
  • Make sorting fun and interactive
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might mix up categories or struggle with less obvious examples

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Ability to categorize animals and explain their diet

Extension Activities

  • Create a drawing of an animal and what it eats
  • Go on a nature walk and observe different animals
  • Use BibleMouse Printables Library worksheets for additional practice
