Learning Objectives

1

Understand how Earth's surface changes through building up and breaking down processes

2

Identify examples of deposition and weathering in nature

3

Appreciate God's incredible design of Earth's dynamic systems

Genesis 1:10

God called the dry land Earth, and the gathering together of the waters he called Seas. God saw that it was good.

Genesis 1:10 (WEB)

Demonstrates God's intentional design of Earth's landscape and geological processes

📦 Materials Needed

  • Sand or soil
  • Small rocks
  • Water pitcher
  • Large shallow tray
  • BibleMouse Science Observation Journal
  • Pencil

Lesson Plan

1Opening (3 min)

Remind students about yesterday's lesson on sudden Earth changes

💭 Review Question: What fast changes can happen to Earth's surface?
2Teaching (10 min)

Explain how Earth builds up and breaks down through natural processes

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Deposition happens when rocks and soil are added to new locations
  • Weathering breaks rocks into smaller pieces
  • God designed Earth to constantly change and renew itself
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • Can you think of places where rocks or soil have been moved?
  • How might water help move rocks and soil?
3Activity: Deposition Demonstration (12 min)
investigation

Create a mini landscape showing how water moves soil and rocks

📝 Instructions:
  1. Place tray on a slight angle
  2. Sprinkle small rocks and soil at top of tray
  3. Slowly pour water to see how materials move
  4. Observe and draw results in BibleMouse Science Observation Journal
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Parent helps pour water and guide observation

Challenge: Measure and record exact distance materials travel

4Closing (3 min)

Discuss observations and relate to God's amazing Earth design

📝 Review Questions:
  • What did you notice happening in our experiment?
  • How do you see God's creativity in how Earth changes?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll learn about Earth's different layers

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Geological processes are complex but can be simplified for young learners

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Use gentle, encouraging language
  • Allow child to explore and make observations
  • Connect scientific concepts to God's design
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might get frustrated if water doesn't move materials exactly as expected

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Child's curiosity and willingness to observe carefully

Extension Activities

  • Take a nature walk and look for examples of deposition
  • Read BibleMouse recommended book about Earth's changes

Ready for Tomorrow?

Great job completing today's lesson!
