Learning Objectives

1

Understand how plants prevent soil erosion

2

Conduct a simple scientific experiment comparing soil conditions

3

Recognize God's design in protecting the Earth

Genesis 2:15

Yahweh God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate and keep it.

Genesis 2:15 (WEB)

Shows God's intention for humans to care for and protect the Earth, just as plants protect soil from erosion

📦 Materials Needed

  • 2 small trays or shallow containers
  • Soil
  • Grass seeds or small plants
  • Watering can or cup
  • Notebook for observations

Lesson Plan

1Opening (3 min)

Welcome to today's BibleMouse science adventure! Yesterday we learned how water, wind, and ice change the Earth. Today, we'll explore how we can help protect the ground God created.

💭 Review Question: What did we learn about how water moves soil?
2Teaching (10 min)

Erosion happens when soil is moved by water, wind, or other forces. Plants are like God's special protectors for the ground!

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Plants have roots that hold soil in place
  • Roots create a network that stops soil from washing away
  • Different plants protect soil in different ways
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • Have you ever seen a muddy river after a big rainstorm?
  • Why do you think farmers plant crops in rows?
3Activity: Soil Protection Experiment (12 min)
experiment

Compare how soil with plants and without plants responds to water

📝 Instructions:
  1. Fill two trays with the same amount of soil
  2. In one tray, plant grass seeds or small plants
  3. Leave the other tray with bare soil
  4. Gently pour the same amount of water on each tray
  5. Observe and record what happens to the soil
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Use a gentle stream of water from a watering can

Challenge: Measure and record the amount of soil movement

4Closing (3 min)

Let's talk about what we discovered in our BibleMouse experiment!

📝 Review Questions:
  • What happened to the soil with plants?
  • What happened to the soil without plants?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll explore how big changes can happen quickly on Earth!

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Erosion is a natural process where soil and rock are moved by water, wind, or ice

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Use gentle, slow water flow to simulate rain
  • Encourage careful observation
  • Let children make their own discoveries
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might get impatient waiting for results

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Understanding of how plants protect soil

Extension Activities

  • Create a poster showing how plants prevent erosion
  • Plant a small garden to see roots in action
  • Use the BibleMouse Printables Library for erosion coloring sheets
