Learning Objectives

1

Understand how wind and ice cause weathering and erosion

2

Identify landforms shaped by wind and ice

3

Develop curiosity about God's creative natural processes

Job 37:9-10

From the chamber of the south comes the storm, and cold from the scattering winds.

Job 37:9-10 (WEB)

Demonstrates God's power in creating natural forces that shape the earth

📦 Materials Needed

  • Sand
  • Small rocks
  • Ice cubes
  • Plastic tray
  • Hairdryer (optional)
  • World English Bible

Lesson Plan

1Opening (3 min)

Welcome to today's BibleMouse science adventure! Yesterday we learned how water moves earth materials. Today, we'll explore how wind and ice do the same thing!

💭 Review Question: Can you remember one way water changes the earth's surface?
2Teaching (10 min)

Wind and ice are powerful forces that change our planet. Just like God created water to move rocks and soil, He also designed wind and ice to reshape landscapes.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Wind can blow away loose soil and sand
  • Ice can break rocks when water freezes inside cracks
  • These processes happen very slowly over many years
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • Have you ever seen wind blow leaves or sand?
  • What happens to puddles when they freeze?
3Activity: Wind and Ice Erosion Experiment (12 min)
observation

Demonstrate how wind and ice move materials

📝 Instructions:
  1. Place sand and small rocks on a tilted plastic tray
  2. Gently blow on the materials or use a hairdryer on low
  3. Observe how wind moves the sand
  4. Place ice cube on rocks and observe how it might create cracks
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Just blow gently on sand

Challenge: Create a wind erosion model tracking sand movement

4Closing (3 min)

BibleMouse science is about discovering God's amazing world!

📝 Review Questions:
  • What did wind do to our sand?
  • How might ice change rocks?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll do more erosion experiments and see how plants can help prevent soil movement!

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Erosion is a slow process of earth materials being moved by natural forces

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Be patient with hands-on exploration
  • Encourage careful observation
  • Use gentle language about God's design
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might get impatient waiting to see slow changes

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Child's curiosity about natural processes

Extension Activities

  • Create a wind erosion journal tracking changes
  • Collect rocks to observe potential ice damage
  • Use BibleMouse Printables Library for erosion coloring pages
