Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Gather students in a circle. Explain that today we'll be 'reading detectives' exploring a special story Jesus told about love and forgiveness.

💭 Review Question: What does it mean to love someone who makes mistakes?
2Teaching (10 min)

Read the Prodigal Son parable, using simple language and encouraging students to listen for clues about feelings and actions.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • The son made a big mistake
  • The father still loved his son
  • Forgiveness is important
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • How do you think the son felt when he left home?
  • What did the father do when the son came back?
  • How is God's love like the father in the story?
3Activity: Parable Inference Detectives (7 min)
hands-on

Students work in pairs to create inference charts about characters' feelings and actions.

📝 Instructions:
  1. Draw a T-chart with 'Clues' and 'What I Infer'
  2. Find 3 clues from the story
  3. Write what those clues tell us about the characters
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Teacher helps complete chart

Challenge: Add more complex inferences

4Closing (3 min)

Recap how we can understand stories by looking for clues and thinking deeply.

📝 Review Questions:
  • What did you learn about God's love today?
  • How can we show love to others?
🙏 Prayer:

Dear Jesus, thank you for teaching us about love and forgiveness through your stories.

Coming up: Next week, we'll explore more ways to understand stories!
