Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Gather students in a circle and explain that today we're going to be 'Detail Detectives' who look closely at how details help us understand a story's big idea.

💭 Review Question: Can you tell me what a detail is?
2Teaching (8 min)

Details are like little clues that help us understand the main idea of a story. They answer questions like 'Who?' 'What?' 'Where?' and 'Why?'

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Details are like puzzle pieces
  • Main idea is the big picture
  • Details help explain the main idea
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What details do you remember from our last story?
  • How do details help us understand what a story is about?
3Activity: Detail Detective Cards (10 min)
hands-on

Students will create a graphic organizer with a main idea card and colored detail cards

📝 Instructions:
  1. Draw a big circle in the center for the main idea
  2. Create 3-4 smaller cards with details around the main circle
  3. Color-code details (green for who, blue for where, etc.)
  4. Share your detective work with a partner
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Teacher provides pre-written main idea and helps with details

Challenge: Students create their own story and details

4Closing (2 min)

Review what we learned about details and main ideas

📝 Review Questions:
  • What is a detail?
  • How do details help us understand a story?
🙏 Prayer:

Dear Jesus, thank you for helping us learn and understand. Help us to be good listeners and learners.

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll continue being Detail Detectives with longer stories!
