Learning Objectives

1

Understand what a bar graph is and how it displays data

2

Compare bar graphs to picture graphs learned previously

3

Develop curiosity about organizing and representing information

Proverbs 3:19-20

Yahweh by wisdom founded the earth. By understanding, he established the heavens.

Proverbs 3:19-20 (WEB)

Just as God uses wisdom to organize creation, we can use graphs to organize and understand data

📦 Materials Needed

  • graph paper
  • colored pencils
  • ruler
  • BibleMouse Resource Guide: Grade 2 Math

Lesson Plan

1Opening (3 min)

Recall previous lesson about picture graphs and how we can show information visually

💭 Review Question: What did we learn about showing data in our last lesson?
2Teaching (10 min)

Introduce bar graphs as another way to show data, comparing to picture graphs

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Bar graphs use rectangles of different heights to show amounts
  • Each bar represents a different category
  • The height of the bar shows how many or how much
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • How are bar graphs similar to picture graphs?
  • What makes bar graphs different?
3Activity: BibleMouse Bar Graph Exploration (12 min)
discussion

Create a simple bar graph showing favorite fruits in the family

📝 Instructions:
  1. Draw a horizontal line for categories
  2. Draw a vertical line for numbers
  3. Draw bars to show how many of each fruit family likes
  4. Color each bar a different color
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Use pre-drawn graph paper with lines already marked

Challenge: Create a bar graph with more complex data

4Closing (3 min)

Review what we learned about bar graphs

📝 Review Questions:
  • What makes a bar graph different from a picture graph?
  • How do the heights of bars help us understand information?

Coming up: Tomorrow we will practice creating our own bar graphs

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Bar graphs are an important data visualization skill

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Be patient and demonstrate each step clearly
  • Encourage creativity in coloring and drawing
  • Focus on understanding, not perfect execution
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might find drawing straight lines challenging

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Child's ability to relate bar height to quantity

Extension Activities

  • Create a bar graph of Bible characters by their age
  • Graph family members' favorite Bible stories
