  • Place value chart
  • Pencil
  • Paper

Lesson Plan

1Opening (3 min)

Welcome to today's BibleMouse math adventure! Yesterday, we learned about building numbers with God's blocks. Today, we're going on a Place Value Treasure Hunt!

💭 Review Question: Can you tell me how many tens and ones were in the number we worked with yesterday?
2Teaching (10 min)

Let's explore how numbers are like treasure maps. Each digit has a special value depending on where it sits!

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • In a number like 42, the 4 represents 40 (four tens)
  • The 2 represents 2 ones
  • Together, they make 42 - a complete number treasure!
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What makes a number's position so special?
  • How can we tell the difference between tens and ones?
3Activity: Number Treasure Hunt (12 min)
game

Students will search for number treasures by identifying tens and ones

📝 Instructions:
  1. Spread number cards face down
  2. Draw a card and read the number
  3. Use base-ten blocks to show the tens and ones
  4. Record the number on your treasure map (place value chart)
  5. Earn a point for each correctly identified number
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Use numbers 10-50 only

Challenge: Include three-digit numbers and challenge students to explain their thinking

4Closing (3 min)

Celebrate your mathematical discoveries and thank God for helping us understand numbers!

📝 Review Questions:
  • What did we learn about place value today?
  • How can numbers be like a treasure hunt?

Coming up: Tomorrow, we'll learn how to trade ten ones for one ten - another exciting BibleMouse math adventure!
