Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Gather students and explain that today we're learning how to make our writing clear by removing sentences that don't help tell our story.

💭 Review Question: Can you think of a time when someone told a story that didn't make sense?
2Teaching (8 min)

Sometimes when we write, we include sentences that don't help tell our main story. Just like cleaning our room helps us find things better, cleaning our writing helps readers understand us better.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Every sentence should help tell the main story
  • Ask yourself: 'Does this sentence help explain my main idea?'
  • If a sentence doesn't fit, it's okay to remove it
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What makes a good sentence?
  • How can we tell if a sentence belongs?
3Activity: Sentence Surgery (8 min)
hands-on

Students will practice removing unnecessary sentences from sample paragraphs

📝 Instructions:
  1. Give each student a sample paragraph
  2. Read the paragraph together
  3. Identify sentences that don't fit the main topic
  4. Cut out unnecessary sentences
  5. Glue the remaining sentences to create a clearer story
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Teacher helps identify off-topic sentences

Challenge: Students create their own paragraphs and swap to edit

4Closing (4 min)

Celebrate how students improved their writing by removing unnecessary sentences

📝 Review Questions:
  • What did you learn about removing sentences?
  • Why is it important to stay on topic?
🙏 Prayer:

Dear Jesus, help us communicate clearly and thoughtfully, just like You always spoke with purpose.
