Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Gather students in circle. Show different picture cards and ask how they might describe the picture using descriptive words.

💭 Review Question: Can you tell me a word that describes something?
2Teaching (8 min)

Today we'll learn how some words describe things (nouns) and some describe actions (verbs).

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Adjectives describe nouns like 'red ball' or 'happy child'
  • Adverbs describe how actions happen like 'run quickly' or 'sing sweetly'
  • Different words help us understand more about what we're talking about
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What's the difference between a red ball and running quickly?
  • How might you describe how Jesus loves us?
3Activity: Noun/Verb Sorter (8 min)
game

Students sort word cards into 'Describing Things' and 'Describing Actions' baskets

📝 Instructions:
  1. Give each student 3-4 word cards
  2. Have them decide which basket the word belongs in
  3. Discuss as a group why they chose each placement
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Use fewer cards with more obvious differences

Challenge: Include tricky words that could be both

4Closing (4 min)

Recap what we learned about describing words

📝 Review Questions:
  • What's an adjective?
  • What's an adverb?
  • Can you give me an example?
🙏 Prayer:

Dear Jesus, thank You for giving us wonderful words to express Your love and our feelings.

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll learn how adverbs help us serve God
