Gather children and show pictures of pioneer log cabins and sod houses. Ask children to imagine moving to a new place with nothing but their family and a few tools.
Pioneers worked together as families to build their first homes. They often used logs from nearby forests or cut and stacked sod from prairie grasslands. Every family member helped, even young children.
Children will create a simple log cabin using Popsicle sticks and construction paper
Simpler: Pre-cut Popsicle sticks for younger children
Challenge: Add more detailed cabin features like a chimney or surrounding landscape
