2

Learn about daily challenges in covered wagon travel

3

Appreciate pioneers' courage and faith

Joshua 1:9

Haven't I commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; don't be afraid, neither be dismayed: for Yahweh your God is with you wherever you go.

Joshua 1:9 (WEB)

Just like pioneers trusted God during their difficult journey, we can be brave and trust God in our own challenges

📦 Materials Needed

  • Large cardboard box (as wagon)
  • Blankets and pillows
  • Small sacks or baskets
  • Pretend food items
  • Colored paper
  • Markers
  • Scissors

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Gather students around 'covered wagon' box. Ask them to imagine traveling thousands of miles in this small space.

💭 Review Question: What would be hard about traveling in a wagon?
2Teaching (10 min)

Pioneers packed carefully, bringing only essential items. Families would bring tools, seeds, cooking pots, blankets, and a few special treasures. Space was very limited!

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Most wagons were about 10 feet long
  • Families walked beside wagon, not riding
  • Children helped with daily tasks
  • Traveling took 4-6 months
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What would you bring if you could only pack a small bag?
  • How do you think children helped their families?
  • What would make you brave during such a long trip?
3Activity: Pioneer Wagon Packing Challenge (7 min)
hands-on

Students pretend to pack a wagon, choosing limited items

📝 Instructions:
  1. Give each student a small bag
  2. Provide paper 'items' to choose from
  3. Must select carefully to fit everything
  4. Explain reasoning for their choices
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Teacher helps select items

Challenge: Limited weight/space rules

4Closing (3 min)

Remind students about pioneers' courage and faith in God

📝 Review Questions:
  • What was hard about wagon travel?
  • How did families work together?
  • What can we learn from pioneers?
🙏 Prayer:

Dear Jesus, thank you for giving people courage to explore and build new homes. Help us be brave like the pioneers.

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll learn how pioneers built their first homes!

Joshua 1:9

Be strong and of good courage; don't be afraid, neither be dismayed: for Yahweh your God is with you wherever you go.
