Gather students and show large US map. Ask them what they know about the West region.

Explain the Western states include California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. Discuss how these states have mountains, deserts, forests, and coastlines.
