The Pilgrims' Journey
Understand why the Pilgrims wanted religious freedom
Learn about the importance of being able to worship God
Recognize how God guides people who trust Him
“You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourselves an idol, nor any image of anything that is in the heavens above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.”
— Exodus 20:3-4 (WEB)Shows the importance of worshiping God freely and correctly
Gather students and show a world map. Ask them to imagine not being allowed to pray or talk about Jesus. Explain that the Pilgrims faced this problem in England.
Tell the story of the Pilgrims who wanted to worship God in their own way. Explain how they were treated badly in England because they wanted to read the Bible and pray differently from the king's church.
Students create a simple church or worship scene showing people praying freely
Simpler: Provide pre-drawn templates
Challenge: Add Bible verse to the artwork
Remind students that God loves when we worship Him and wants us to be free to love and follow Him
Dear God, thank You for giving us the freedom to worship You. Help us always love and follow You. Amen.
Coming up: Tomorrow we'll learn about the Pilgrims' long boat journey to America!
