— Numbers 33:1 (WEB)God guided His people on important journeys, just like explorers used maps to find their way
Gather students around the world map. Explain that today we'll learn about exciting journeys in history and how maps help us understand them.
Introduce three historical journeys: Columbus's voyage, Lewis and Clark's expedition, and the Oregon Trail. Show each route on the map using different colored strings.
Students will trace the routes of historical journeys on their own worksheets, using cardinal directions and map skills learned throughout the year.
Simpler: Provide pre-drawn routes for tracing
Challenge: Add additional research about each journey's challenges
Recap the journeys we learned about and how maps help us understand history
Dear God, thank You for guiding explorers and helping them discover new places. Help us to be brave like these travelers and trust in Your direction.
Coming up: Next week, we'll learn more about how maps help us understand the world around us!
