  • Flashlight
  • Eraser

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Welcome to today's BibleMouse art lesson! Remember how we learned about value and shading yesterday? Today we'll explore how light creates shadows and highlights.

💭 Review Question: Can you tell me what value means in art?
2Teaching (10 min)

Light is magical - it helps us see the world around us. When light hits an object, it creates bright spots called highlights and dark areas called shadows.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Light comes from a source like the sun or a lamp
  • Shadows form on the opposite side of the light source
  • The closer to the light, the brighter the object appears
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What happens when you shine a flashlight on a ball?
  • Can you see how the shadow changes when you move the light?
3Activity: Shadow Detective (15 min)
observation and exploration

Use a flashlight to explore how light creates shadows on different objects

📝 Instructions:
  1. Place a white object on a plain surface
  2. Shine the flashlight from different angles
  3. Observe how the shadows change
  4. Draw the object and its shadow in your BibleMouse art journal
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Focus on drawing just the object's main shape

Challenge: Try to show different values in the shadow

4Closing (5 min)

Let's remember our Bible verse - Jesus is the light of the world, just like our flashlight reveals shapes, Jesus reveals God's love!

📝 Review Questions:
  • What did you learn about light and shadows?
  • How do shadows change when you move the light?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll practice shading geometric shapes to make them look three-dimensional!

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Young children are developing spatial reasoning and understanding of light interactions

💡 Teaching Tips:

  • Encourage observation over perfect drawing
  • Make it fun and playful
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might get frustrated if shadows look different than expected

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Child's curiosity about how light changes object appearance

Extension Activities

  • Take a nature walk and observe shadows outdoors
