  • Colored pencils or watercolors
  • Pencils
  • Erasers
  • Reference landscape photos

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Gather students and review the depth techniques learned this week: size, overlapping, and placement. Show examples of landscapes with clear foreground, middle ground, and background.

💭 Review Question: What makes something look far away in a picture?
2Teaching (5 min)

Explain how artists create depth by using different techniques. Demonstrate how to divide the paper into three layers and add details that show distance.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Foreground has the largest, most detailed objects
  • Middle ground has medium-sized objects
  • Background has small, less detailed objects
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What might be in the foreground of a landscape?
  • How can we make things look far away?
3Activity: Three-Layer Landscape Creation (10 min)
hands-on project

Students will create their own landscape showing three distinct layers of depth

📝 Instructions:
  1. Divide paper into three horizontal sections
  2. Draw largest objects in foreground
  3. Add medium-sized objects in middle ground
  4. Create small, less detailed objects in background
  5. Color and add details carefully
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Provide a template with sections already drawn

Challenge: Add more complex details and use multiple depth techniques

4Closing (5 min)

Share and discuss artwork, highlighting how depth was created

📝 Review Questions:
  • What makes something look far away?
  • What did you do to show depth in your picture?
🙏 Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for creating such a beautiful world full of amazing details. Help us to see and appreciate the wonderful depths in your creation.

Coming up: Next week, we'll explore more ways to create beautiful art that shows God's creativity

Genesis 1:31
