Practice drawing objects higher on the page to show distance

3

Explore creative ways to show depth in artwork

Genesis 1:1

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

Just as God carefully created the world with depth and layers, we can create art that shows the beauty of His creation

📦 Materials Needed

  • White drawing paper
  • Colored pencils
  • Pencils
  • Landscape reference photos
  • Erasers

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Gather students and show several landscape reference photos. Ask them to notice how things look smaller and higher up on the page seem farther away.

💭 Review Question: What makes something look far away in a picture?
2Teaching (8 min)

Demonstrate drawing a simple landscape by placing mountains high on the page, trees in the middle, and flowers in the foreground. Explain how placement creates the illusion of distance.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Objects higher on the page look farther away
  • Smaller objects appear more distant
  • Placement helps create depth in artwork
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What do you notice about how things look far away?
  • How can we make something look like it's far in the distance?
3Activity: Placement Depth Exploration (10 min)
hands-on

Students will create a landscape drawing using placement to show depth

📝 Instructions:
  1. Draw a horizon line about 2/3 down the page
  2. Draw mountains very high on the page in light pencil
  3. Add trees in the middle ground, making them medium-sized
  4. Draw flowers and rocks in the foreground, making them large and detailed
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Trace pre-drawn landscape template with guidance

Challenge: Add additional landscape details like rivers or clouds

4Closing (2 min)

Share artwork and discuss how placement creates depth

📝 Review Questions:
  • What did you learn about showing distance?
  • How can we make things look far away?
🙏 Prayer:

Dear Jesus, thank you for creating such a beautiful world with amazing depths and distances. Help us see the wonder in Your creation.

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll combine all our depth techniques in a special landscape project!

Psalm 104:24
