Line Quality and Expression
Learn the basic technique of contour line drawing
Practice hand-eye coordination
Understand how lines can trace object edges
“By Yahweh's word, the heavens were made; all their army by the breath of his mouth.”
— Psalm 33:6 (WEB)Just as God carefully created each detail, we can carefully trace the lines of objects in our drawings
Gather students and explain that today we'll learn a special drawing technique called contour drawing where we trace the edges of objects very slowly
Demonstrate contour drawing by picking up an object and slowly tracing its outline without looking at the paper, keeping eyes on the object
Students will choose an object and draw its outline without lifting their pencil or looking at the paper
Simpler: Trace a simple object with clear edges
Challenge: Try drawing a more complex object with many curves
Share drawings and discuss how it felt to draw in this new way
Dear Jesus, thank you for giving us creativity to see and draw the beautiful world around us.
Coming up: Next week, we'll explore more ways to use lines in our art!
“Yahweh by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding he established the heavens.”
— Proverbs 3:19 (WEB)🎯 Activity: Trace the words in the air while saying the verse
Contour drawing helps develop observational skills and hand-eye coordination
Children might get frustrated if their drawing doesn't look 'realistic'
Focused attention and willingness to try a new technique
