Emphasis and Focal Points
Understand how contrast can draw attention in artwork
Create an artwork using light/dark or big/small contrasts
Recognize how emphasis helps tell a visual story
“Even so, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”
— Matthew 5:16 (WEB)Just like contrast makes something stand out in art, God wants our good actions to stand out and bring glory to Him
Show examples of artwork with strong contrast. Ask children what they notice first in each picture.
Contrast is when things look very different from each other. In art, we can use big/small, light/dark, or bright/dull to make something important stand out.
Create a picture where one thing stands out by using contrast
Simpler: Draw a big sun on a light background
Challenge: Create a nighttime scene with one bright element
Share artworks and discuss how contrast made things special
