📦 Materials Needed

  • Drawing paper
  • Colored pencils
  • Several art prints or images
  • Magnifying glass
  • Blank white paper

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Gather children and show various art images. Ask them to quickly share what they notice first in each picture.

💭 Review Question: What made you look at that part of the picture first?
2Teaching (8 min)

Artists use special tricks to make us look at certain parts of their artwork. They create 'focal points' that are like signposts for our eyes.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Artists use color, size, and placement to guide our eyes
  • Some parts of artwork are more interesting than others
  • Our eyes naturally look at bright, big, or different things
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What part of this picture do you see first?
  • Why do you think the artist wants you to look there?
  • How does the artwork make your eyes move around?
3Activity: Eye Spy Artwork Detective (10 min)
hands-on exploration

Children will explore artwork and create their own visual pathway map

📝 Instructions:
  1. Choose an artwork print
  2. Use a magnifying glass to explore the picture
  3. Draw a simple map showing where your eyes travel
  4. Circle the main 'focal point' with a bright color
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Use large, colorful artwork prints

Challenge: Create a story about why the focal point is important

4Closing (2 min)

Share discoveries and talk about how God helps us focus on what matters most

📝 Review Questions:
  • What did you learn about how artists catch our attention?
  • Can you describe the most interesting part of your artwork?
🙏 Prayer:

Dear Jesus, thank You for giving us eyes to see beautiful things. Help us learn to focus on what's truly important. Amen.

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll learn how artists use contrast to make things stand out!
