Practice different ways of changing paper

3

Observe and describe physical changes in materials

Ecclesiastes 3:1

For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven.

Ecclesiastes 3:1 (WEB)

Just like paper can be changed, God shows us that things in life can change too

📦 Materials Needed

  • Different types of paper (construction paper, printer paper)
  • Safety scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Crayons or markers

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Gather students in a circle and show different pieces of paper. Ask them to describe what they see.

💭 Review Question: What can we do to change a piece of paper?
2Teaching (5 min)

Demonstrate cutting, folding, and tearing paper while explaining that some changes cannot be undone.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • When we cut paper, we can't put it back together exactly the same
  • Folding can be reversed, but tearing cannot
  • God designed materials to have different properties
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What happens when we cut paper?
  • Can we make the paper look exactly the same after cutting?
3Activity: Paper Change Exploration (8 min)
hands-on

Students experiment with changing paper through different methods

📝 Instructions:
  1. Fold a piece of paper in half
  2. Fold the paper again in quarters
  3. Use safety scissors to cut along a fold
  4. Try tearing paper in different ways
  5. Glue paper pieces back together if possible
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Pre-draw lines for cutting

Challenge: Create a simple paper craft using cuts and folds

4Closing (2 min)

Discuss how our paper changed and what we learned

📝 Review Questions:
  • What did you do to change your paper?
  • Could you make the paper look exactly the same after cutting?
🙏 Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for creating amazing materials that can change in wonderful ways.

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll explore more ways materials can change!

Proverbs 3:19
