Learning Objectives

1

Identify different material properties through hands-on testing

2

Classify materials based on their waterproof, strength, and flexibility characteristics

3

Develop curiosity about how God designed materials with unique purposes

Proverbs 3:19

Yahweh by wisdom founded the earth. By understanding, he established the heavens.

Proverbs 3:19 (WEB)

God's wisdom in creating materials with specific properties and purposes

📦 Materials Needed

  • Various materials (wood, plastic, fabric, paper)
  • Small spray bottle with water
  • Magnifying glass
  • BibleMouse recording sheets
  • Plastic tray or container

Lesson Plan

1Opening (3 min)

Welcome to today's BibleMouse Science Adventure! Yesterday we learned how different materials have special uses. Today, we'll be material detectives!

💭 Review Question: Can you remember one material we talked about yesterday?
2Teaching (10 min)

Today we'll explore how materials have special properties. Some materials keep water out, some bend easily, and some are super strong!

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Materials can be waterproof or absorb water
  • Some materials are flexible, others are stiff
  • Different properties make materials useful for different jobs
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What makes something waterproof?
  • Can you think of something that bends easily?
3Activity: BibleMouse Material Detective Lab (12 min)
experiment

Test different materials to see their special properties

📝 Instructions:
  1. Spread materials on the tray
  2. Spray a small amount of water on each material
  3. Observe what happens - does water sit on top or soak in?
  4. Gently try to bend each material
  5. Record observations on BibleMouse recording sheet
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Help child identify and circle results on sheet

Challenge: Draw pictures of material behavior and write simple descriptions

4Closing (3 min)

Let's share what we discovered about our materials!

📝 Review Questions:
  • Which material stayed dry?
  • What did you find most interesting?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll solve design challenges using what we learned about materials!

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

First-grade scientists are concrete learners who love exploring through touch and observation

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Let child lead exploration
  • Ask open-ended questions
  • Celebrate curiosity over 'correct' answers
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might get materials wet or mixed up - this is part of learning!

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Child's excitement about discovering material properties

Extension Activities

  • Create a material sorting game using BibleMouse Printables
  • Read a science storybook about materials from BibleMouse Read-Aloud Library

Ready for Tomorrow?

Great job completing today's lesson!
