Learning Objectives

1

Identify different materials' light transmission properties

2

Classify materials as transparent, translucent, or opaque

3

Develop curiosity about how light interacts with different objects

John 8:12

Jesus spoke to them again, saying, 'I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.'

John 8:12 (WEB)

Just as we explore how light passes through different materials, Jesus teaches that He is the light that illuminates our spiritual understanding

📦 Materials Needed

  • Flashlight
  • Clear plastic wrap
  • Wax paper
  • Cardboard
  • White fabric
  • Dark fabric
  • Recording sheet
  • Pencil

Lesson Plan

1Opening (3 min)

Welcome to today's BibleMouse science adventure! Yesterday, we played with shadows. Today, we'll discover how different materials interact with light.

💭 Review Question: What did you learn about shadows in our last lesson?
2Teaching (10 min)

Let's explore how light travels through different materials. Some materials let light pass through completely, some partially, and some block light entirely.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Light is like a special traveler that can move through some things
  • Some materials are clear like windows
  • Some materials are cloudy like wax paper
  • Some materials block light completely like cardboard
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What do you think will happen when we shine a light through different objects?
  • Can you guess which materials might let light through?
3Activity: Light Traveler Experiment (12 min)
experiment

Test different materials to see how light passes through them

📝 Instructions:
  1. Darken the room slightly
  2. Shine flashlight through each material
  3. Record what you see on your BibleMouse recording sheet
  4. Sort materials into 'lets light through', 'lets some light through', 'blocks light'
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Parent helps child classify materials

Challenge: Child predicts light transmission before testing

4Closing (3 min)

Review our light discoveries and connect to our Bible verse about Jesus being the light

📝 Review Questions:
  • What materials let light through?
  • Which materials blocked the light?

Coming up: Tomorrow, we'll learn special words for these light properties!

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

First graders are concrete learners who love hands-on exploration

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Keep explanations simple and engaging
  • Encourage child's natural curiosity
  • Make connections to everyday experiences
🤔 Common Struggles:

Maintaining focus and understanding abstract light concepts

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Excitement about discovery, ability to categorize materials

Extension Activities

  • Create a light transmission poster using BibleMouse Printables Library
  • Explore light sources around the house
  • Sing a BibleMouse song about light and discovery
