Learning Objectives

1

Understand how water moves through plant stems

2

Make and test a scientific prediction

3

Appreciate God's intricate design in plant life

Psalm 104:14

He causes the grass to grow for the livestock, and plants for man to cultivate, that he may produce food from the earth.

Psalm 104:14 (WEB)

Demonstrates God's intentional design in how plants grow and function

📦 Materials Needed

  • 3-4 celery stalks with leaves
  • 3 clear glasses or jars
  • Water
  • Food coloring (red, blue, green)
  • Pencil
  • BibleMouse Science Observation Sheet

Lesson Plan

1Opening (3 min)

Welcome to today's BibleMouse science adventure! Yesterday, we learned about how flowers help plants make seeds. Today, we'll discover something amazing about how plants drink water!

💭 Review Question: Can you remember what we learned about flowers yesterday?
2Teaching (10 min)

Plants are incredible living things that God designed with special ways to get water and nutrients. Just like we drink water through our mouths, plants drink water through their stems!

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Plants need water to grow
  • Water travels up from roots to leaves
  • We can see this happening with a special experiment
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • How do you think water gets from the ground to the leaves?
  • What do plants use water for?
3Activity: Celery Water Journey (12 min)
experiment

We'll watch water travel through celery stems using food coloring!

📝 Instructions:
  1. Fill three clear glasses with water
  2. Add different food coloring to each glass
  3. Place one celery stalk in each colored water glass
  4. Wait and observe what happens
  5. Draw what you see on your BibleMouse Observation Sheet
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Use fewer colors or fewer celery stalks

Challenge: Predict how long it will take for color to reach leaves

4Closing (3 min)

Let's thank God for creating plants with such amazing ways of getting water!

📝 Review Questions:
  • What colors did we use?
  • Where did you see the colored water go?

Coming up: Tomorrow, we'll check our experiment and see how far the colored water traveled!

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

This experiment demonstrates capillary action in plants

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Be patient - color change takes a few hours
  • Encourage careful observation
  • Let child make their own predictions
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might get impatient waiting for color to move

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Child's curiosity and careful watching of the experiment

Extension Activities

  • Take photos of experiment stages
  • Draw pictures of celery stalks in BibleMouse Science Journal
  • Discuss other ways plants get water

Ready for Tomorrow?

Great job completing today's lesson!
