Learning Objectives

1

Understand how energy moves through a food chain

2

Create a simple food chain using arrows

3

Recognize God's intentional design in nature's interconnectedness

Genesis 1:29-30

God said, 'Behold, I have given you every herb yielding seed, which is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree, which bears fruit yielding seed. It will be food for you. To every animal of the earth, and to every bird of the sky, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food.' And it was so.

Genesis 1:29-30 (WEB)

This verse shows God's intentional design of how living things get energy and sustenance

📦 Materials Needed

  • Construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Markers
  • Food chain picture cards
  • Yarn or string

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Today's BibleMouse lesson will help us understand how God designed creatures to get energy from each other!

💭 Review Question: Can you remember what we learned about plant-eaters and meat-eaters yesterday?
2Teaching (10 min)

In nature, energy moves like a special pathway. Plants start the chain by making their own food. Then plant-eaters get energy by eating plants. Meat-eaters get energy by eating other animals.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Plants are the first step in every food chain
  • Energy moves from one living thing to another
  • Each creature has an important role
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What do rabbits eat?
  • What might eat a rabbit?
3Activity: Food Chain Arrow Game (12 min)
hands-on

Create a food chain using paper and arrows to show energy movement

📝 Instructions:
  1. Draw a plant on the first paper
  2. Draw a plant-eating animal on the second paper
  3. Draw a meat-eating animal on the third paper
  4. Connect the papers with arrows showing energy flow
  5. Label each part of your food chain
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Use pre-printed picture cards instead of drawing

Challenge: Create a more complex food chain with 4-5 organisms

4Closing (3 min)

Let's review how energy moves through nature!

📝 Review Questions:
  • Where do food chains always start?
  • How does energy move from one living thing to another?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll play a fun game where we become parts of a food chain!

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Food chains demonstrate the intricate connections in God's created ecosystem

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Use lots of hand motions to show energy movement
  • Encourage creativity in the activity
  • Be patient with fine motor skill challenges
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might find drawing or cutting challenging

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Understanding of basic energy flow concept

Extension Activities

  • Take a nature walk and identify potential food chain components
  • Read a BibleMouse library book about ecosystems
