Learning Objectives

1

Identify which objects are magnetic

2

Understand that not all materials are attracted to magnets

3

Practice making predictions and testing hypotheses

Proverbs 27:17

Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.

Proverbs 27:17 (WEB)

Just as some objects are attracted to magnets, God draws people who love Him closer together

📦 Materials Needed

  • Various magnets
  • Collection of small objects (metal paper clips, wooden blocks, plastic toys, rubber bands, aluminum foil, coins)
  • Sorting tray or paper plate
  • Worksheet with 'Magnetic' and 'Not Magnetic' columns

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Gather students in a circle and show a magnet. Ask, 'What do you know about magnets?' Listen to responses and share that today we'll discover what things magnets can pick up.

💭 Review Question: What did we learn about magnets yesterday?
2Teaching (8 min)

Magnets have a special power to pull some things toward them. Not everything will stick to a magnet. Things with iron inside will be attracted, but wood, plastic, and other materials won't move.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Magnets have a special pulling power
  • Only certain metals will stick to magnets
  • We can test and predict what will happen
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What do you think will happen when I put this magnet near this object?
  • Why do you think some things stick and others don't?
3Activity: Magnetic Sort Challenge (10 min)
hands-on experiment

Students will predict and then test which objects are magnetic by using a magnet to see what sticks.

📝 Instructions:
  1. Spread out different objects on the table
  2. Make a prediction: Will this object stick or not?
  3. Test each object with the magnet
  4. Sort objects into 'Magnetic' and 'Not Magnetic' groups
  5. Draw or write results on worksheet
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Help students sort objects with direct guidance

Challenge: Have students create their own prediction chart before testing

4Closing (2 min)

Review what we learned about magnetic and non-magnetic objects

📝 Review Questions:
  • What did you learn about magnets today?
  • Can you name something magnetic?
  • Can you name something that is not magnetic?
🙏 Prayer:

Dear God, thank You for creating such amazing things in our world. Help us learn and discover Your wonderful creation. Amen.

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll learn about magnet poles and how they can push or pull each other!

Proverbs 27:17

Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.

🎯 Activity: Magnet Matching Game

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Children are exploring basic properties of magnetism through hands-on discovery

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Encourage curiosity and careful observation
  • Let children make predictions before testing
  • Use positive reinforcement for scientific thinking
🤔 Common Struggles:

Some children might get frustrated if their predictions are incorrect

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Child's ability to make a prediction and then test it scientifically

Extension Activities

  • Create a magnetic treasure hunt around the house
  • Make a magnet art project
  • Read a children's book about magnets

Ready for Tomorrow?
