Learning Objectives

1

Identify push and pull forces in daily activities

2

Understand how forces make objects move

3

Recognize that God designed movement in creation

Colossians 1:17

He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

Colossians 1:17 (WEB)

God creates and sustains the forces that make things move

📦 Materials Needed

  • Toy cars
  • Balls
  • Toy blocks
  • Small wheeled objects
  • Large open floor space

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Gather children in a circle. Demonstrate pushing and pulling different objects. Ask children to mimic pushing and pulling motions.

💭 Review Question: What happens when you push or pull something?
2Teaching (8 min)

Explain that pushes and pulls are forces that make things move. God designed movement in the world around us.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Pushing moves things away from you
  • Pulling moves things toward you
  • Forces help objects start, stop, or change direction
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • Can you show me a push?
  • What happens when you pull a toy car?
  • How do forces help us move things?
3Activity: Force Movement Exploration (10 min)
hands-on

Children explore pushing and pulling objects across different surfaces

📝 Instructions:
  1. Divide children into small groups
  2. Give each group various objects
  3. Experiment pushing and pulling on floor, carpet, and tables
  4. Observe how different surfaces affect movement
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Use only one surface type

Challenge: Measure and compare distances objects move

4Closing (2 min)

Recap how pushes and pulls make things move

📝 Review Questions:
  • What is a push?
  • What is a pull?
  • How do forces help things move?
🙏 Prayer:

Dear God, thank You for creating a world where things can move and change. Help us understand Your wonderful design.

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll learn about how stronger pushes make things move faster!

Colossians 1:17

He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

Colossians 1:17 (WEB)

🎯 Activity: Movement verse - children move while saying each word

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

First graders are learning basic physics concepts about forces and motion

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Use lots of physical demonstrations
  • Encourage children to experiment safely
  • Connect scientific concepts to God's design
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might find it challenging to distinguish between push and pull forces

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Ability to demonstrate and describe basic force movements

Extension Activities

  • Create a home obstacle course using pushing and pulling
  • Draw pictures of things that move by pushing or pulling
  • Play 'Simon Says' with force movements
