Learning Objectives

1

Observe how different substances interact with water

2

Understand that some things dissolve and some do not

3

Practice careful scientific observation

Genesis 1:2

The earth was formless and empty. Darkness was on the surface of the deep. God's Spirit was hovering over the surface of the waters.

Genesis 1:2 (WEB)

God created water and gave it special properties that help life on Earth

📦 Materials Needed

  • Clear glasses or jars
  • Water
  • Salt
  • Sugar
  • Food coloring
  • Cooking oil
  • Wooden spoon
  • Measuring spoons

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Gather students and ask them to think about different things they've seen mixed with water - like juice, salt in cooking, or tea.

💭 Review Question: What happens when you put something in water?
2Teaching (7 min)

Today we'll explore how different things mix with water. Some things disappear (dissolve) and some float on top or stay separate.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Water can mix with many things
  • Some substances dissolve completely
  • Some substances stay separate
  • God designed water to be special
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What do you think will happen when we add salt to water?
  • Have you ever seen sugar disappear in tea?
  • What might happen with oil?
3Activity: Water Mixing Experiment (10 min)
hands-on experiment

Students will carefully add and mix different substances into water, observing what happens

📝 Instructions:
  1. Pour water into four clear glasses
  2. Add a spoonful of salt to one glass
  3. Add a spoonful of sugar to another glass
  4. Add a few drops of food coloring to the third glass
  5. Add a little cooking oil to the fourth glass
  6. Stir each glass and observe carefully
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Adult helps with pouring and mixing

Challenge: Students predict what will happen before mixing

4Closing (3 min)

Discuss observations and marvel at how God created water to interact with different substances

📝 Review Questions:
  • What disappeared in the water?
  • What stayed on top?
  • Which mixing surprised you?
🙏 Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for creating water and making it so wonderful and unique. Help us to appreciate the amazing world you designed.

Coming up: Next week, we'll learn more about how water moves and changes!

Psalm 104:24

O Yahweh, how many are your works! In wisdom have you made them all. The earth is full of your riches.

Psalm 104:24 (WEB)

🎯 Activity: Water Drop Verse - write each word of the verse on a water droplet-shaped paper

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Children are learning basic scientific observation skills and properties of mixtures

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Encourage careful observation
  • Let children make guesses before mixing
  • Focus on the process, not perfect results
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might get excited and mix things too quickly

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Careful watching, curiosity about changes

Extension Activities

  • Draw pictures of water mixing experiment
  • Create a science journal page about observations
  • Try mixing other safe household substances

Ready for Tomorrow?

Great job completing today's lesson!
