Learning Objectives

1

Observe water changing between solid and liquid states

2

Understand how temperature affects water's form

3

Recognize God's amazing design in water's properties

Genesis 1:2

Now the earth was formless and empty. Darkness was on the surface of the deep. God's Spirit was hovering over the surface of the waters.

Genesis 1:2 (WEB)

Just as God created water with amazing properties, we can explore and marvel at His wonderful creation

📦 Materials Needed

  • Ice cubes
  • Clear glass or cup
  • Warm water
  • Freezer
  • Thermometer (optional)
  • Towel

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Gather students and ask about ice they've seen. Talk about how water can change forms.

💭 Review Question: Who can tell me what happens when ice gets warm?
2Teaching (8 min)

Explain how water changes between solid (ice) and liquid states depending on temperature.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Cold temperatures make water become solid (ice)
  • Warm temperatures make ice melt into liquid water
  • God designed water to be flexible and change
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What do you think makes ice turn back into water?
  • Where have you seen ice melt before?
3Activity: Ice Melting Adventure (10 min)
hands-on experiment

Students will observe ice melting and track its transformation

📝 Instructions:
  1. Place ice cube in clear glass
  2. Watch and observe how it changes
  3. Optional: Use warm water to speed up melting
  4. Discuss observations
  5. Refreeze water to show it can become ice again
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Just watch ice melt naturally

Challenge: Use thermometer to measure temperature changes

4Closing (2 min)

Recap how water can change forms

📝 Review Questions:
  • What did we learn about water today?
  • How does God make water special?
🙏 Prayer:

Dear Jesus, thank You for creating water in such amazing ways. Help us notice the wonderful things You've made.

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll learn about mixing things in water!

Psalm 104:24

How many are your works, Yahweh! In wisdom have you made them all. The earth is full of your creatures.

Psalm 104:24 (WEB)

🎯 Activity: Water Drop Hand Motions: Wiggle fingers like falling water droplets when saying 'your works'

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Water's ability to change states is a fundamental scientific concept

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Let children touch and observe ice safely
  • Encourage curiosity about water's properties
  • Connect scientific observation to God's design
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might get impatient waiting for ice to melt

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Child's ability to describe water changing forms

Extension Activities

  • Draw pictures of ice melting
  • Make ice cube paintings
  • Create a water state change journal

Ready for Tomorrow?
