Learning Objectives

1

Understand that water is a liquid that takes the shape of its container

2

Observe and describe water's movement in different containers

3

Learn how God created water with special properties

Genesis 1:2

The earth was formless and empty, and darkness was over the surface of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.

Genesis 1:2 (WEB)

Just as water can change and move, God is creative and can shape things in amazing ways

📦 Materials Needed

  • Clear glasses or containers of different shapes
  • Water
  • Pitcher or measuring cup
  • Towels for cleanup

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Gather children and talk about how water is special. Ask them to imagine water moving and changing.

💭 Review Question: Can you show me how water might move in different containers?
2Teaching (8 min)

Water is a liquid that always takes the shape of whatever container it's in. God made water with this amazing ability to move and flow.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Liquids can change shape but stay the same amount
  • Water flows and moves easily
  • God designed water to be flexible
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What shapes have you seen water in?
  • How does water move differently than a rock?
3Activity: Water Shape Explorer (10 min)
hands-on

Children will pour water into different containers to see how it changes shape

📝 Instructions:
  1. Give each child a few different shaped containers
  2. Slowly pour water into each container
  3. Observe how water moves and takes the container's shape
  4. Draw or describe what they see
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Use only 2-3 containers with very different shapes

Challenge: Predict water's shape before pouring

4Closing (2 min)

Discuss how amazing God's creation of water is

📝 Review Questions:
  • What happened when you poured water?
  • Did the water always stay the same amount?
  • How is water special?
🙏 Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for creating water that can move and flow. You are an amazing Creator!

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll learn about how water can change from ice to liquid!

Psalm 104:24

O Yahweh, how many are your works! In wisdom you have made them all. The earth is full of your creatures.

Psalm 104:24 (WEB)

🎯 Activity: Water Wave Motions: Kids act out verse while moving like water

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

First graders are learning about basic properties of liquids and how they differ from solids

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Use clear containers for best visibility
  • Allow children to explore and make observations
  • Encourage careful pouring to minimize spills
🤔 Common Struggles:

Some children might have difficulty pouring carefully

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Child's ability to describe water's movement and shape-changing

Extension Activities

  • Draw pictures of water in different containers
  • Collect different containers to experiment with at home
  • Watch online videos about water's properties
