Water Investigations
Predict whether objects will sink or float in water
Understand that objects have different properties that affect buoyancy
Learn to make scientific observations
“Now the earth was formless and empty. Darkness was on the surface of the deep. God's Spirit was hovering over the surface of the waters.”
— Genesis 1:2 (WEB)God created water and gave different objects their unique properties
Gather students and explain we'll be exploring how different objects behave in water. Ask them to imagine what might happen when objects are placed in water.
Explain that some objects sink (go to the bottom) while others float (stay on top of the water). This depends on the object's weight and how it's shaped.
Students will predict and then test various objects in water
Simpler: Use fewer objects
Challenge: Ask students to explain why objects float or sink
Recap what we learned about objects in water
Dear God, thank you for making such a wonderful world where we can learn and explore. Amen.
Coming up: Tomorrow we'll see how water can change shape!
“O Yahweh, how many are your works! In wisdom have you made them all. The earth is full of your riches.”
— Psalm 104:24 (WEB)🎯 Activity: Hand motions showing creating and exploring
Understanding buoyancy helps children develop scientific thinking skills
Children might get frustrated if predictions are incorrect
Curiosity about object properties and willingness to test ideas
