Learning Objectives

1

Predict whether objects will sink or float in water

2

Understand that objects have different properties that affect buoyancy

3

Learn to make scientific observations

Genesis 1:2

Now the earth was formless and empty. Darkness was on the surface of the deep. God's Spirit was hovering over the surface of the waters.

Genesis 1:2 (WEB)

God created water and gave different objects their unique properties

📦 Materials Needed

  • Large clear container or basin
  • Water
  • Collection of small objects (wooden block, plastic toy, metal spoon, cork, rock, feather)
  • Paper and pencil
  • Towel for cleanup

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Gather students and explain we'll be exploring how different objects behave in water. Ask them to imagine what might happen when objects are placed in water.

💭 Review Question: What do you think will happen when different things go into water?
2Teaching (8 min)

Explain that some objects sink (go to the bottom) while others float (stay on top of the water). This depends on the object's weight and how it's shaped.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Not all objects behave the same in water
  • Weight and shape matter
  • We can make predictions and then test them
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • Do you think a rock will sink or float?
  • What about a feather?
  • Why do you think that?
3Activity: Sink or Float Investigation (10 min)
hands-on experiment

Students will predict and then test various objects in water

📝 Instructions:
  1. Draw a prediction chart with 'Sink' and 'Float' columns
  2. Hold up each object and ask students to predict
  3. Gently place object in water
  4. Observe and record what actually happens
  5. Discuss why each object sank or floated
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Use fewer objects

Challenge: Ask students to explain why objects float or sink

4Closing (2 min)

Recap what we learned about objects in water

📝 Review Questions:
  • What surprised you today?
  • Can you name something that floats?
  • Can you name something that sinks?
🙏 Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for making such a wonderful world where we can learn and explore. Amen.

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll see how water can change shape!

Psalm 104:24

O Yahweh, how many are your works! In wisdom have you made them all. The earth is full of your riches.

Psalm 104:24 (WEB)

🎯 Activity: Hand motions showing creating and exploring

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Understanding buoyancy helps children develop scientific thinking skills

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Let children make genuine predictions
  • Avoid correcting 'wrong' guesses
  • Emphasize the joy of discovery
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might get frustrated if predictions are incorrect

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Curiosity about object properties and willingness to test ideas

Extension Activities

  • Collect more objects to test
  • Try making boats from aluminum foil
  • Draw pictures of sink/float results

Ready for Tomorrow?

Great job completing today's lesson!
