Learning Objectives

1

Practice careful observation using multiple senses

2

Learn to record detailed scientific observations

3

Develop curiosity about the world around us

Proverbs 18:15

The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge; the ears of the wise seek it out.

Proverbs 18:15 (WEB)

God gives us curiosity and the ability to observe and learn about His wonderful creation

📦 Materials Needed

  • Mystery boxes
  • Science journals
  • Pencils
  • Magnifying glasses
  • Various small objects (smooth, rough, different shapes)

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Gather students and explain that today they will become 'Observation Detectives' - scientists who look very carefully at objects to learn about them

💭 Review Question: What does a detective do?
2Teaching (7 min)

Demonstrate how to make careful observations using multiple senses (except taste)

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Look closely
  • Feel the object's texture
  • Listen for any sounds
  • Notice color and shape
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What makes a good observation?
  • How can we learn about something by looking carefully?
3Activity: Mystery Box Observations (10 min)
hands-on

Students will explore mystery boxes with various objects, carefully recording observations in science journals

📝 Instructions:
  1. Divide into small groups
  2. Each group gets a mystery box
  3. Use magnifying glass to look closely
  4. Gently feel object without looking
  5. Draw and write observations in journal
  6. Share observations with group
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Provide more guidance and fewer objects

Challenge: Add more complex objects with subtle differences

4Closing (3 min)

Discuss what students discovered and learned about being careful observers

📝 Review Questions:
  • What did you notice about your mystery object?
  • Was it hard or easy to observe carefully?
🙏 Prayer:

Dear God, Thank You for giving us eyes to see and minds to explore Your amazing world. Help us always be curious and observant. Amen.

Coming up: Tomorrow we will learn about making predictions in science!

Proverbs 18:15

The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge; the ears of the wise seek it out.

Proverbs 18:15 (WEB)

🎯 Activity: Whisper verse and have students repeat, acting like careful detectives

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

First-grade students are learning foundational scientific observation skills

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Encourage detailed descriptions
  • Help children focus on specific sensory details
  • Make observation feel like an exciting detective game
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might get distracted or give vague descriptions

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Detailed drawings, use of descriptive words, excitement about discovery

Extension Activities

  • Nature walk observation journal
  • Home scavenger hunt for interesting objects
  • Draw detailed pictures of favorite observed items
