Explore how different instruments make different sounds

3

Practice describing sound characteristics

Psalm 98:4

📦 Materials Needed

  • Small bells
  • Rubber bands
  • Empty glass bottles
  • Wooden spoons
  • Small drums or containers
  • Water

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Gather in a circle and talk about different sounds we hear. Ask children to make animal sounds or instrument sounds.

💭 Review Question: What sounds do you hear every day?
2Teaching (7 min)

Explain how sound changes with volume (loudness) and pitch (high or low). Demonstrate by singing or using instruments.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Loud sounds are big and strong
  • Soft sounds are quiet and gentle
  • High pitch sounds are squeaky
  • Low pitch sounds are deep
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • Can you make a loud sound?
  • What happens when you blow softly into a bottle?
  • How can we make different sounds?
3Activity: Sound Explorers (10 min)
hands-on

Children experiment with making different sounds using various instruments and objects

📝 Instructions:
  1. Fill glass bottles with different water levels
  2. Blow across bottle tops to make different pitches
  3. Tap bells and drums with different strengths
  4. Stretch rubber bands and pluck them
  5. Compare and describe the sounds
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Use only 2-3 types of instruments

Challenge: Try to create a simple melody

4Closing (3 min)

Gather and share favorite sounds discovered during activity

📝 Review Questions:
  • What was your favorite sound?
  • How did you make loud and soft sounds?
  • What did you learn about sound today?
🙏 Prayer:

Dear God, thank You for creating such wonderful sounds in Your world. Help us listen and appreciate the music around us.

Coming up: Tomorrow we will explore how light makes shadows!

Psalm 98:4

Make a joyful noise to Yahweh, all the earth!

Psalm 98:4 (WEB)

🎯 Activity: Sing the verse with different volumes and pitches
