Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Welcome to today's BibleMouse math adventure! Let's review what we learned yesterday about adding numbers.

💭 Review Question: Can you show me how you add 34 + 5 without regrouping?
2Teaching (10 min)

Today we'll learn how to make a new ten when adding numbers. Sometimes when we add, the ones column gets too big!

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • When adding makes more than 9 in the ones column, we need to 'regroup'
  • We'll use base-ten blocks to help us see how this works
  • Regrouping means we trade 10 ones for 1 ten
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What happens when we have too many ones?
  • How can we make a new ten?
3Activity: Regrouping Block Party (12 min)
hands-on

Use base-ten blocks to demonstrate adding numbers that require regrouping

📝 Instructions:
  1. Take a two-digit number card
  2. Add a one-digit number
  3. Use base-ten blocks to show the addition
  4. If ones exceed 9, trade for a ten block
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Use smaller numbers (like 27 + 6)

Challenge: Try adding three numbers that require regrouping

4Closing (3 min)

Let's review what we learned about making new tens!

📝 Review Questions:
  • What do we do when we have more than 9 ones?
  • How do base-ten blocks help us understand regrouping?

Coming up: Tomorrow, we'll explore adding numbers using a hundred chart!

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Regrouping is a critical math skill that helps children understand place value

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Be patient - this concept can be challenging
  • Use lots of physical manipulatives
  • Celebrate small successes
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children often forget to 'carry' the ten or get confused about moving blocks

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Child can explain why and how they move blocks when regrouping

Extension Activities

  • Create a regrouping game using dice
  • Practice regrouping with BibleMouse Printables Library worksheets
