Learning Objectives

1

Create true mathematical equations using manipulatives

2

Understand the concept of mathematical equality

3

Develop problem-solving skills through hands-on exploration

Proverbs 11:1

A false balance is an abomination to Yahweh, but a just weight is his delight.

Proverbs 11:1 (WEB)

Just as God values fairness and balance, today we'll explore mathematical balance and equality

📦 Materials Needed

  • linking cubes
  • balance scale
  • number cards
  • paper
  • pencil

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Welcome to today's BibleMouse math adventure! Let's review what we learned about equations yesterday.

💭 Review Question: Can you show me an equation where the equal sign is not just at the end?
2Teaching (10 min)

Today we'll create our own true equations using cubes and a balance scale.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • An equal sign means both sides have the same value
  • We can make equations in different ways
  • Our balance scale helps us check if equations are true
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What does 'equal' mean?
  • How can we make sure both sides of an equation have the same value?
3Activity: Equation Creation Station (12 min)
project

Use linking cubes and balance scale to create true equations

📝 Instructions:
  1. Choose number cards to create an equation
  2. Build that equation on one side of the balance scale
  3. Create a matching value on the other side
  4. Write down your true equation on paper
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Use smaller numbers, help with cube counting

Challenge: Create more complex equations with multiple steps

4Closing (3 min)

Share your favorite equation and explain how you know it's true

📝 Review Questions:
  • What did we learn about equality today?
  • How did the balance scale help us?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll learn about counting on beyond ten!

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

First graders are learning that equality is about balanced values, not just end-of-equation results

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Be patient and praise effort
  • Let child explore and make mistakes
  • Use lots of positive encouragement
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might get frustrated if equations don't balance immediately

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Child demonstrates understanding that both sides have same total value

Extension Activities

  • Create a math journal page illustrating favorite equation
  • Play 'Balance the Equation' game with family members

Ready for Tomorrow?

Great job completing today's lesson!
