Learning Objectives

1

Create a simple picture graph using concrete objects

2

Understand that each picture represents one item

3

Develop skills in organizing and displaying data

Proverbs 3:19

Yahweh by wisdom founded the earth. By understanding, he established the heavens.

Proverbs 3:19 (WEB)

Just as God uses wisdom to organize the universe, we learn to organize information through graphs

📦 Materials Needed

  • Graph paper
  • Colored sticky notes
  • Crayons
  • Sorting objects (buttons, stickers, or small toys)
  • BibleMouse Data Collection Sheet

Lesson Plan

1Opening (3 min)

Welcome to today's BibleMouse math adventure! Yesterday, we collected data about our favorite things. Today, we'll turn that data into a colorful picture graph!

💭 Review Question: What did we learn about collecting information yesterday?
2Teaching (10 min)

Picture graphs help us see information in a fun, visual way. Each picture stands for one item, just like each person matters to God.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • A picture graph uses images to show how many of something we have
  • Each picture represents exactly one item
  • We can easily see which category has more or less
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What are some things we could count and graph?
  • How might a picture graph help us understand information?
3Activity: Favorite Fruit Picture Graph (12 min)
hands-on

Create a picture graph showing your family's favorite fruits

📝 Instructions:
  1. Gather different colored sticky notes
  2. Choose 3-4 types of fruits to graph
  3. Count how many people like each fruit
  4. Draw or stick one picture per person's choice
  5. Create columns showing fruit preferences
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Use pre-drawn fruit stickers instead of drawing

Challenge: Add total numbers and compare columns

4Closing (3 min)

Let's review our picture graph and see what we learned!

📝 Review Questions:
  • What did our graph tell us about fruit preferences?
  • How many pictures did we use?

Coming up: Tomorrow, we'll learn about bar graphs and how they help us compare information

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Picture graphs are an early introduction to data visualization

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Be patient and make the activity fun
  • Encourage creativity in graph design
  • Focus on the process, not perfect results
🤔 Common Struggles:

Children might get confused about each picture representing one item

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Consistent placement of pictures, understanding of one-to-one representation

Extension Activities

  • Create a picture graph of Bible heroes
  • Graph favorite Bible stories in BibleMouse Printables Library
