Learning Objectives

1

Understand how to compare two-digit numbers using comparison symbols

2

Use the 'alligator mouth' analogy to determine which number is larger

3

Develop a curiosity about mathematical order and God's design

Proverbs 3:19

Yahweh by wisdom founded the earth. By understanding, he established the heavens.

Proverbs 3:19 (WEB)

Just as God used wisdom and understanding to create order in the universe, we use mathematical principles to understand order in numbers

📦 Materials Needed

  • Comparison symbol cards (>, <, =)
  • Number cards 10-99
  • Colored paper or cardboard for alligator mouth craft
  • Scissors
  • Markers or crayons

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Welcome to today's BibleMouse math adventure! Let's remember how we learned about place value in our last lesson and now we'll discover how numbers can tell us a fun story.

💭 Review Question: Can you show me how we write 45 in expanded form?
2Teaching (10 min)

Introduce the 'Hungry Alligator' comparison method. The alligator always wants to eat the BIGGER number!

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • The alligator's mouth always opens toward the BIGGER number
  • When numbers are the same, we use the = symbol
  • We look at the tens place first, then the ones place
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • Which number do you think the alligator would want to eat first?
  • How can we tell which number is bigger?
3Activity: Alligator Number Comparison Game (12 min)
hands-on

Create a hands-on alligator mouth that 'eats' bigger numbers

📝 Instructions:
  1. Cut out a large alligator mouth from colored paper
  2. Draw teeth on the edges of the mouth
  3. Practice placing number cards and showing which side the alligator wants to eat
  4. Take turns comparing different two-digit numbers
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Use numbers between 10-50

Challenge: Include three-digit number comparisons

4Closing (3 min)

Review our alligator comparison skills and celebrate our mathematical discoveries!

📝 Review Questions:
  • What does the alligator do with numbers?
  • How do we decide which number is bigger?

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll learn more strategies for comparing numbers using tens first!

Teaching Notes

📚 Background:

Young learners often struggle with understanding abstract comparison concepts. The alligator analogy makes this concrete and fun!

💡 Teaching Tips:
  • Use lots of positive encouragement
  • Make the activity playful and game-like
  • Allow child to explore and make mistakes
🤔 Common Struggles:

Distinguishing tens place from ones place

👀 Signs of Understanding:

Child can correctly identify larger number and place comparison symbol

Extension Activities

  • Create a number comparison poster for bedroom wall
  • Play 'Alligator Appetite' card game with family
