3

Understand that characters are important in storytelling

1 Samuel 16:7

But Yahweh said to Samuel, "Don't look on his appearance, or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For Yahweh sees not as man sees. Man looks at the outward appearance, but Yahweh looks at the heart."

Just like God looks at a person's heart, good stories show characters' inner qualities, not just how they look

  • Character description worksheet
  • Colored pencils
  • Picture book

Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

💭 Review Question: Can you name a character from a story you know?

  • Characters do things in the story
  • Characters have feelings
  • Characters help us understand the story
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What makes a character interesting?
  • How can you tell what a character is like?
  • Do characters always do good things?
3Activity: Character Detective (7 min)
hands-on

Students will draw and describe a character from their imagination, focusing on both what the character looks like and how they might act.

📝 Instructions:
  1. Draw a picture of a character

  3. Share your character with a friend
🔄 Variations:

4Closing (3 min)

Remember, characters help make stories special and interesting!

📝 Review Questions:
  • What makes a good character?
  • Can characters teach us something?
🙏 Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for giving us imagination to create stories and characters. Help us to be kind and loving like the best characters we read about.

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll learn about where stories happen - the setting!
