2Teaching (8 min)

Explain that a map key tells us what different symbols represent. Show how each symbol on the map has a meaning.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Different colors and shapes represent different places
  • A key helps us understand what we're looking at
  • Maps help us know where things are located
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What places do you see on this map?
  • Can you find a park? A school? A store?
3Activity: Neighborhood Map Exploration (8 min)

Children will explore the neighborhood map, using the key to identify different locations.

📝 Instructions:
  1. Give each child a copy of the neighborhood map
  2. Ask them to find specific locations using the map key
  3. Color or mark the locations they find
  4. Share what they discovered with the group
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Help children identify just 2-3 locations

Challenge: Have children create a short story about a journey through the neighborhood using the map

4Closing (4 min)

Review what we learned about map keys and reading maps

📝 Review Questions:
  • What does a map key help us do?
