Lesson Plan

1Opening (5 min)

Gather students and show pictures of old ice boxes. Ask what they think these strange boxes might be used for.

💭 Review Question: How do we keep our food cold today?
2Teaching (8 min)

Before refrigerators, people used special methods to keep food cold. They used ice boxes filled with big blocks of ice, cool underground cellars, and other clever ways to preserve food.

📌 Key Talking Points:
  • Ice blocks were delivered to homes
  • Families stored food in cool, dark places
  • Canning helped keep fruits and vegetables safe to eat
💬 Discussion Questions:
  • What do you think it was like without a refrigerator?
  • How is keeping food cold different today?
3Activity: Cold Storage Challenge (7 min)
hands-on experiment

Compare how things stay cold in different places

📝 Instructions:
  1. Put an ice cube in a glass of water
  2. Put another ice cube in a cooler
  3. Check which one melts slower
  4. Discuss why some places keep things colder
🔄 Variations:

Simpler: Just observe the melting ice cubes

Challenge: Time how long each ice cube takes to melt

4Closing (5 min)

Remind students how God helps us find smart ways to take care of our food

📝 Review Questions:
  • How did people keep food cold long ago?
  • What do we use today to keep food fresh?
🙏 Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for helping people learn better ways to take care of food and keep our families healthy.

Coming up: Tomorrow we'll learn about how people used to send messages!

Proverbs 12:27
