Our Local Government
Identify different community services
Understand how local government helps people
Recognize the importance of serving others
“For you, brothers, were called for freedom. Only don't use your freedom for an opportunity to the flesh, but through love be servants to one another.”
— Galatians 5:13 (WEB)Just like community workers serve others, we are called to serve one another with love
Gather children and ask about helpers they see in the community. Discuss different ways people help others.
Explain different community services: police officers protect us, firefighters keep us safe, librarians help us learn, parks give us places to play, and road workers make sure we can travel safely.
Children match community service pictures to their descriptions
Simpler: Pre-cut pictures for younger children
Challenge: Add more complex service descriptions
Review what we learned about community services
Dear Jesus, thank you for the wonderful people who help take care of our community. Help us be helpers too!
Coming up: Tomorrow we'll learn about how citizens choose leaders
